New York Times Best Sellers #1: KILLING JESUS, by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard. (Holt.) Jesus' life and times, and the events leading up to his execution.

I have read the book and would like to recommend it to Roman Catholics and Christians who want to know more about Jesus as a historical figure, the most influential man who ever lived. Over 2000 years after his death in the hands of Roman soldiers, there are more than 2.2 billion people who follow his teaching and truly believe that he is God.

This is a fact-based account of Jesus’s life and times. This book also provided historical record of prominent figures such as Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Caesar Augustus, Emperor Tiberius, Herod the Great, Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate, John the Baptist, Caiaphas (the most powerful high priest in the Jerusalem Temple who had complete power over religious life in Jerusalem and the enforcer of Jewish law, including the power to condemn a man or woman to death through The Great Sanhedrin which was a court comprised of 71 judges with absolute authority to enforce Jewish religious law. He was also a friend of Rome who wanted to be in power and kept the money flow to Rome, his family, and colleagues), and other prominent historical figures in the known world at that time.

Jesus was a carpenter before embarking on his revolutionary teaching that led to his violent death by crucifixion which the Romans reserved for criminals and worst enemies of Rome, an intellectual, his knowledge of Jewish law and Scriptures was encyclopedic, charismatic, compassionate, gifted public speaker, knew how to pick a spot to draw a huge audience, knew how to pick a fight, loved to use parable which is more memorable than quoting from the Scriptures, was afraid of being killed but able to control his fear, sometimes answered a question with a question, and was brave to die for his belief.

Jesus was executed to death by illegal court of Sanhedrin at night to prevent riot from his followers who were common and poor people. He was accused of proclaiming himself Son Of God which was a blasphemy according to Jewish Law, being Godlike, and a threat and enemy to Rome who believed its Emperor Tiberius was God. And he threatened to stop the money flow which was one of the main sources of tribute to Rome during the Passover and other Jewish festivities at Jerusalem Temple in which all the pilgrims had to offer sacrifice of unblemished lambs or doves, and Temple tax in shekel.

The shekel was the only currency that the Temple accepted for all financial transactions (Jewish currency/coin, 1 shekel is equivalent to 30 denarius (Roman currency/coins)). The money changers robbed the poor with their unjust acts. Caiaphas and his crew controlled this lucrative business of providing the lambs, doves, and shekels. They robbed Jewish people who were already burdened with extreme and hash Roman taxations.

It was ironic that those who accused Jesus of blasphemy they themselves proclaimed that Emperor Tiberius is their king, the man who claimed himself God. They accepted him as their king and their God, breaking the first Commandment of their own Jewish faith.

Again, this book is highly recommended. It is a fast-pace and highly entertaining book, reader friendly with notes and facts sprinkled on almost every page. I was surprised to find out that Jerusalem Temple was built on the precise location atop Mount Moriah where Abraham almost sacrificed Isaac, where King David chose to build the First Temple and where Lord God gathered dust to create Adam, the first man.

And I was stunned to find out that there was a Roman garrison called Antonia Fortress connected to the northwest corner of Jerusalem Temple that could house thousands of Roman soldiers. It had the platform and access to the top wall of the Temple which Roman soldiers used to patrol and keep an eye on Jewish people. I was surprised at the details of the cross that our Lord Jesus had to carry and the way Roman soldiers executed their gruesome task of crucifixion. I was unnerved at the age of Our Lord which was not the same as we have known and accepted throughout the ages.
